OV-Fiets Netherlands

OV-fiets is a bike rental service operated by Netherlands Railways (NS) at train stations nationwide. The service provides regular bicycles for completing journeys beyond the train station. Users need either a free OV-fiets subscription on a personal OV-chipkaart or an NS Flex pass. Rental is initiated by tapping the chipkaart against the lock at any station location; the system unlocks the bike and begins the rental period. Bikes must be returned to the same location where they were collected—returning elsewhere stops the rental only when the ringlock is fully closed. Pricing is charged per 24-hour period, not by the hour: standard rates apply for the first three days, then rise to €5 per day beyond day 3. A maximum rental period is 7 days. The NS app or Mijn NS account provides real-time visibility into active rentals and costs charged to the OV-chipkaart. Payment is automatic through the chipkaart, with no upfront fees or hidden charges. Damage caused by negligent use becomes the renter's financial responsibility. The service is intended for connecting train travel to local destinations but does not offer point-to-point drop-off at different locations.
